BGS Institute: Job Opportunities

We are currently looking for the following positions:

1. School Program Leader

The Biogeoscience Institute located at Barrier Lake field station in Kananaskis Country is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time Student Program Leader  reporting to the School Program Coordinator.

Primary Role is to plan, prepare, and deliver 2 and 3 day residential environment and ecology education programs for Calgary and area schools at the Barrier Lake Field Station. Assist with the scheduling of equipment, facilities, and research sites, and the design, delivery, and evaluation of new field/lab activities as required.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Lead all aspects of planning, preparation, instruction, and evaluation of field and lab activities of current programs.
  • Ensure that a contingency plan is in place for severe weather conditions or schools' needs, prior to the delivery of an activity.
  • Ensure that resource materials (i.e. journals, field manuals, equipment, and teaching resources) are ready for each program and monitor, clean, repair, or request replacement of field/lab equipment as required.
  • Need to become very familiar with program philosophy,Junior & Senior High science curriculum connections, program manuals and resources, equipment and teacher resource materials for each program.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Degree in Education or Science (preferably Ecology).
  • Teaching skills in environment or ecology education. 
  • Working knowledge of outdoor school operations or program development. 
  • Demonstrate a pro-active team apprach to problem solving or planning.
  • First Aid certification 
  • Police check are required.

2. Food Services Worker

The Biogeoscience Institute located at Barrier Lake field station in Kananaskis Country is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time Food Services Worker.  Reporting to the Head Chef, these positions must be available for various shifts, including weekends and holidays (up to 37.5 hours/week).  Flexibility in work schedule is required.

Excellent communication, flexibility, and initiative are important qualities, as well as pleasant and friendly personal skills. Due to the nature of the facility, team-working skills are imperative. Police check required.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Your key accountabilities will be assisting with the safe and efficient food production and cleanliness of a busy kitchen and dining area. Your duties will include preparing trays, cleaning and peeling vegetables, preparing salads, making cookies, cleaning dishes and utensils, and putting away food orders.

Qualifications / Requirements:

Flexibility in work schedule is required. Excellent team working skills and a friendly personality are essential. You must also be dependable and able to work on your own. To qualify for this position, experience in the food service industry is preferable, but not a requirement as training will be provided.
